Train Techniques Developed for Law Enforcement

Ground Survival Self-Defense (GSSD) is a 12-month law enforcement training program designed for police departments seeking to equip their officers with practical, leverage-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills for physically de-escalating dangerous encounters.

Don’t go viral for the wrong reasons — protect your officers while safely gaining control of resisting and aggressive subjects. Rather than relying on strength, strikes, or higher levels of force, GSSD teaches officers how to control and restrain resisting or aggressive subjects while reducing the risk of serious injury to both the officer and the offender.

The system combines practical BJJ techniques with the realities of law enforcement encounters, giving officers a safer, more controlled way to respond when a physical confrontation goes to the ground.

What happens next can change everything.

When a physical encounter turns violent, an officer’s response can affect not only their own safety, but the safety of the person they are trying to control. These encounters can escalate in seconds, forcing officers to make critical decisions under pressure while balancing the appropriate level of force.

At the same time, use-of-force encounters face intense scrutiny from departments, courts, the public, and the media. The challenge is not simply stopping an assault—it is having enough effective options to regain control before an encounter escalates further.

Need to improve police officer safety?

Physical encounters are unpredictable. An officer can go from verbal commands to a hands-on struggle in seconds. When that confrontation goes to the ground, the risks increase quickly.

Looking to reduce excessive use of force?

When officers have limited options for controlling a resisting subject, physical encounters can escalate fast. More effective control skills give officers additional ways to stabilize a situation.

Want to protect offenders during encounters?

Every physical encounter carries the possibility of injury to both the officer and the offender. Departments need tactics that help officers gain compliance while minimizing trauma.

GSSD Gives Police Officers the Skills to Defend, Control, and De-Escalate

Prepare officers with defensive skills for real-world encounters.

Defensive Tactics Training Shouldn’t Be a Once-or-Twice-a-Year Event

Most departments already provide defensive tactics training — the challenge is expert instruction and consistent repetition.

Defensive skills require repetition to hold up under stress, and a few sessions each year may not be enough to build the instinctive response officers need during fast-moving encounters. GSSD supplements your department’s existing defensive tactics training with a 12-month program consisting of two classes per month, giving officers the consistent repetition needed to strengthen their response under pressure.

Program Benefits

Get expert, ongoing instruction

Supplement existing defensive tactics training with 24 classes over 12 months and consistent coaching from an experienced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor with 30 years on the mat.

Train techniques built for law enforcement

Sport-focused and unnecessarily high-risk techniques are removed in favor of practical, leverage-based methods that account for duty gear, weapon access, control, restraint, and officer safety.

Learn to de-escalate physical encounters

Give officers more control options during hands-on encounters, helping them stabilize resisting or aggressive subjects before situations escalate to higher levels of force.

Reduce injuries to officers and offenders

Law enforcement agencies that have incorporated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-based defensive tactics have reported reductions in both officer and civilian injuries.

Reduce department liability

Better control, improved decision-making under pressure, and fewer unnecessary escalations can help departments reduce exposure associated with preventable injuries and excessive use-of-force incidents.

Maintain community trust

When officers can control difficult physical encounters with greater precision and restraint, departments are better positioned to protect both public safety and community confidence.

A Program Built Specifically for Law Enforcement

Learn from an IBJJF-certified Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor with decades of experience on the mat.

Braulio Corral is the owner and Senior Instructor at Corral’s Martial Arts and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt registered with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation through Marcello C. Monteiro. With more than 30 years of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Braulio has spent decades developing the technical knowledge, control principles, and teaching experience needed for real-world physical encounters.

Ground Survival Self-Defense was not created as a sport program.

Braulio originally developed his law-enforcement self-defense program in the early 2000s to give officers additional tools for controlling dangerous physical encounters. Over time, the program evolved around the realities officers face today, with an emphasis on officer safety, offender safety, de-escalation, control, restraint, and reducing the need for higher levels of force.
The result is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu-based defensive system designed specifically for law enforcement.

Our experience at CMA has been wonderful! Professor Braulio and Brianne are incredibly welcoming and supportive — their kids program is top-notch. They have mastered the ability to teach the kids proper technique while also having fun. My daughter has gained great amounts of confidence and meaningful friendships in such a short amount of time. I cannot recommend CMA enoug

Went to my first-ever Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class here and had such a great experience. Everyone was incredibly nice, welcoming, and patient while teaching me the basics and helping me feel comfortable. As a complete beginner, I really appreciated how supportive everyone was throughout the class. I’m definitely looking forward to signing up and continuing my BJJ training with them.
